Wellbeing – Our Top Tips

Wellbeing and the idea of maintaining a state of ‘wellness’ has been around for centuries in various forms. Now it is often described as simply feeling good.

Well-being can be linked to several different benefits including improved physical and mental health, faster recovery times from illness greater productivity and an overall healthier lifestyle.

If the Pandemic taught us anything, it is to spend more time focusing on the things that really matter and not to sweat the small stuff. Our current and future lives are very different for us all now.

With new work structures, working from home or hybrid working, spending more time with friends and families, and enjoying a much healthier work / life balance is top priority for most .

To help support your well-being at work and at home here are some top tips on how you can achieve this..

‘It’s good to talk’ – With the wonders of modern technology, it is so much easier to keep in touch with colleagues, friends, and family these days. 2020 was definitely the year of ‘Zoom’, followed by Teams and many other online group chat platforms.

These forms of communication have been invaluable over the past few years, and whilst catching up over these various chat platforms are a quick and productive way of keeping in touch with people nothing beats meeting up ‘face to face’ with work colleagues, friends, and family.  There is nothing like seeing someone in the flesh.

Achieve

Benefits

Aim to achieve something each day. Create a ‘to-do list’ and have the satisfaction of striking it off when the task has been completed.

Exercise – Winter brings short, cold dark days and we cannot stress how important it is to get out on a daily basis for some exercise. Ideally at least 1 hour but if you cannot manage that then 30 minutes is fine, just having a change of scenery can do the world of good.

Nature – Too often we are too busy to observe the beautiful nature on our doorstep. Take a moment, go to your local park, look around you and relax. Doing this can help improve your mood and reduce feelings of stress and anger.

Sleep – This is essential for our well-being and there are things you can do to encourage a good night’s sleep;

  • Avoid using smartphones, tablets, or other electronic devices for an hour or so before you sleep.
  • Your bedroom should be a relaxing, peaceful environment so avoid television noise, uncomfortable beds etc…
  • Keep regular sleep hours – try and go to bed and get up at roughly the same time every day.
  • Cut down on caffeine.
  • Try not to eat too late.

Activities and Hobbies – Make time for any activities or hobbies that you enjoy. One of the best things we can do for our mental health is to be active. It is a real booster for your mood.

Being active has lots of benefits for our well-being including:

  • Managing Stress
  • Improving confidence
  • Managing symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Improving memory and brain functioning
  • Better heart, muscle, and bone health

Routine

The Benefit

Try and have a routine so you know what you will be doing each day.

Positivity – Reflect on what helps you feel more positive and what does not. Concentrate on the positive side of your life and try and banish negative thoughts.

Research has proven that there is a link between having a positive outlook and improved health, including lower blood pressure, healthier weight, and reduced risk of heart disease.

Positives – Try and find the positives from your current situation and praise the way  you have overcome any recent challenges. It may be that you have got to know your neighbours over the last few years, due to more people being at home during the daytime or learnt a new skill or perhaps made some time for yourself, which we all know we do not often do due to our busy lifestyles.

Working from Home – If you do work from home nowadays, whether full-time or just a few days a week, ensure that you establish a clear work-life balance, it’s easier to work longer hours and have  fewer breaks, when at home. If you have the space in your home do, try and create an environment where you can work comfortably and quietly (ideally not your sofa!) A relatively quiet working space or room will help you with your productivity.

Give to others – Acts of kindness and giving can increase your mental  well-being and along with helping others it makes us feel good as well. It can be the tiniest acts of kindness towards other people – maybe knocking on someone’s door to make sure they are ok or asking someone if they need help. Volunteering in your local community is also a great way of giving back to others who are in lesser need.

Spare time – Circumstances may change for you that mean you may have some more ‘spare time’ on your hands– embrace this time, try reading more, catch up on some box sets, try a new relaxation technique or perhaps take advantage of broadening your knowledge and enrol on one of the many free  online courses that are available. You may wish to learn a new skill or join an exercise class to meet new people. This will also help with your wellbeing and getting you more active.
